They made me an offer I had to refuse

Amazing how powerful some names can be. Last Friday I mentioned Enoch Powell and suddenly all hell broke loose.

In an article supporting Tory leader David Cameron's remarks on how uncontrolled immigration would change the country, I mentioned that many people say "Enoch was right".

I have discovered that this is enough, still, 39 years after the controversial speech which undid him politically, to cause outrage.

A Sunday newspaper put it on the front page and said I was an embarrassment to Cameron. It quoted various people calling for me to be sacked as Conservative parliamentary candidate for Halesowen and Rowley Regis.

The story was duly followed up by the BBC on Sunday. It must have been an exceedingly quiet news day for this piece of flammed-up nonsense from one Sunday paper to be turned into the scandal of the day.

But that's what happened. I was having lunch with my wife, sister and brother-in-law when Councillor Mary Docker called to say she'd had “The Observer” on wanting to know if I was going to be sacked.

Mary, a Sandwell councillor and chairman of the Halesowen and Rowley Regis Conservatives, was a star. She supported me and said she agreed with what I'd said.

Indeed, she said all I was doing was expressing the views of the people who live in my constituency. That was a good thing for a politician to do so no, she would not be asking for me to resign.

Then the Conservative Party press office came on to me, closely followed by Caroline Spelman herself.

Caroline, the Chairman of the party, didn't mince her words. She was not happy. My political career was on the line.

I was summoned to meet her on Sunday at 2pm.

I turned the phone off and tried to enjoy a fireworks display with, among others, another senior Conservative.

They said they agreed with everything I'd said; they were just very glad it was me saying it, not them.

I didn't sleep much on Saturday night and by 4am I was checking out
"The Observer's” front page via the internet. There I was in all my embarrassing glory.

I had made no mention of race. I said Powell was right to warn that unlimited immigration would change the country dramatically.

But “The Observer” injected race into the article in such a way as to imply that I was a racist who endorsed Enoch Powell's racism.

Not true but, as some journalists say, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

I am still stunned that “The Observer” and the BBC considered this a story at all. It's not as if I'm a big-wig or that I said anything particularly controversial.

Still, the story had legs and by breakfast time it was on the telly where Labour Cabinet Minister Peter Hain offered up the ideal sound bite for the story to run and run.

I had, he claimed, exposed the racist underbelly of the Conservative Party.

Utter nonsense but a good quote to keep the story going. Along with the news that I was about to be carpeted by the party chairman.

Then various members of the Shadow Cabinet condemned me in public as well so that by the time I arrived at Caroline Spelman’s home in Dorridge, near Solihull, I was pretty sure I was a condemned man.

Caroline herself was charming. She explained how sensitive the immigration issue was and how dangerous it was for the party to be considered racist.

She said that an experienced journalist like me must realise the risks involved in evoking the name Enoch Powell. The Tories strived so hard to avoid being called “the nasty party” any more and raising the spectre of “rivers of blood” was really too much.

I explained I had not written about race but about numbers. That immigration was a problem because Britain could not accommodate more and more people from overseas.

Then she cut to the chase. My political career would survive if I signed a press release drawn up by the party’s chief spin doctor, Andy Coulson.

It included this sentence: “Although I did not – and do not – support Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ comments, I accept that some of the wording of my column was incredibly stupid.”

It went on to talk about the importance of choosing one’s language with care and apologising for any upset.

I was also required to submit any future articles for the Express & Star (or anywhere else) to the Conservative campaign headquarters before submitting them to the editor.

It was this, even more than the “incredibly stupid” line, that I couldn’t stomach. If I’d agreed to this I could have stayed on as the candidate for Halesowen and Rowley Regis.

I was sorely tempted. You don’t lightly throw away all those years working for the party and an opportunity to become an MP.

But I felt that if I were to agree to these demands I would lose not just my honour and integrity but my credibility as both a journalist and politician.

That’s why I resigned. We agreed the licence I have as a journalist to speak freely is not compatible with a politician’s responsibility to stay “on message”.

Caroline was decent enough to say on the BBC last night that it was the honourable thing to do.

I am surprised the Conservative Party is so intimidated by the BBC and
"The Observer” that it must toe the metropolitan line at all costs.

But that’s apparently how politics works these days as I have discovered the hard way.

What has kept me going, though, and gratified me is the enormous number of messages of support I have received from the constituency, the Black Country, Britain and, indeed, from around the world.

I truly believe that if this country is to have a brighter future, we must accept the need, and embrace the right of everyone who lives here, to be free to express their concerns.

Without it destroying their political careers as it seems to have done mine.

Now you know who is running the country - the truth twisting and lying globalist media like Murdoch. When you get paid for doing something, you soon find out when the boss doesn't like it.

When you do it for the love of your country and not your paypacket, then you are a patriot.

Dear Mr Hastilow,
My congratulations to you. Most people who make statements like that which you have made seldom last a few days without groveling and apologising for the offence to the leftist orthodoxy. Take James Watson and Larry summers for instance. That is a good sign. However there is still an issue to be dealt with. I feel that the majority of Britons do not just see immigrants as part of a set of gloomy housing and welfare statistics. Their economic trail is only part of the problem. The problems also have a cultural dimension. These are people who come from a different culture to ours. And through their numbers, they from communities and their communities serve to alter the face of our cities and towns, erasing what once was once was. This is not a racist position, it is a universal one. The Poles wouldn't be happy if we culturally displaced them from their cities, neither would the Muslims if we religiously altered Saudi towns by erecting churches and demanding the right to conspicuously practice our religion. Mr Hastilow please think about this. While your currant position is a good start, until the cultural problem is addressed, we will not yet have a politician that is truly able to substantively deal with the issue. Please consider this critique.

Good Luck

Isn't it ironic that this country offers asylum to those who seek refuge from persecution elsewhere for their political beliefs, yet the state and the media here think nothing of persecuting a British citizen for his political beliefs?

Have you considered claiming asylum?

And yes, Enoch Powell was right.

I regret that it has happened, sadly free speech something even the BBC still claims to value is something of the dim and distant past.

The Conservatives are so desperate to get back into power, rather than developing a back bone and seeing off the paper tiger that is political correctness and hand ringing self hatred, they are complicit with the spread of the virus.

Many good people have left the Conservatives, because they can stomach the cringe making self deprecation that is part and parcel of being a UK politician. The people of England no longer believe they have to apologise for existing. Nor do we have to apologise for being concerns that our nation, culture and way of life has been hi-jacked without our permission or our vote.

The system of politics is rotten to the core and anyone who supports the main three parties who are largely responsible for bringing things into disrepute must understand and accept that the price for independent thought and bucking the flow is to be ganged up on and extricated or suffocated, sometimes all three.

Some very brave and courageous people has made a stand for decency, honour and free speech they are the growing force that is the English Democrats, with your support for democracy it would make more sense if politicians of principle and truth now left the Tories and helped form a new political force able and willing to take on the malign forces of authoritarianism and follow the sheep politics.

Good luck in all you do, please carefully consider the English Democrats they are probably the last hope England has for saving herself, certainly the Scottish dominated Tories have no intention of doing right by the people of England, and haven't done so for decades.

Fore the past few years I have said 'Enoch Powell was right' at least three times a week to friends and colleagues. Miltiply that by the number of people who say it to me...? The irony of your departure is that a day after the fuss about your comment, the head of MI5 announces that 2,000 al Qaeda are operating inside the UK, and then the media add that the figure could be more like 4,000. Speak the Truth and Shame the Devil.

Unfettered immigration is a disaster for the people of this country, by accommodating all cultures here we end up with none.

Perhaps you could explain, Why. Why does the political class permit all kinds of people to come here?

It cannot be a simple christian 'feelgood' factor, allowing 'asylum' seekers to stay. Or simply a source of cheap labour. Why do we bend over backwards to please the immigrants.

There is obviously some kind of ideology driving this, EU 'law' is one, but 60% of immigrants come from outside the EU.

Why are they doing it and What for?

It is certainly not racist to say what you did. Each country has a right to keep its own 'way of life' without it being taken over by hugh numbers of uncontrolled immigrants who wish to change it for themselves. 'Adapt or go' is a good slogan for anyone coming here (or 'going there' for that matter) but alas, in our case, as things are, Enoch may well have been right.

Hello

This is Roger from Norway.

Thanks for speaking out. You represent the view of ordinary people.

We have the same problem in Norway as you have in UK. The politicians are flooding the country with immigrants. Previously they tried to justify the immigration with economic arguments, but recent reports have shown that the immigration to Norway costs the taxpayer billions of kroner every year. So now they don’t say very much about the advantages of immigration at all. The politicians have finally understood that ordinary people have understood that the politicians are lying about immigration.

We know that the politicians are desperate about bringing more immigrants into the country, but they don’t tell us WHY they so desperately want more immigrants. The reasons they give us are either distortions or outright lies.

The question is: WHO wants the multicultural society? And WHY do they want it?

I think you're an absolute disgrace to British politics.

How dare you voice the concerns of the very people that you would end up serving as an MP. Don't you realise that despite the fact that these people who are paying the wages of MPs and are therefore their employers, should be treated with contempt at all times.

The object of being an MP, is to get your snout in the trough with the other self serving pigs and fill your boots.

You follow the party line whether your constiuents agree or not and just do as you are told.

If you start listening to the people, we might get confused with being a democracy, and we haven't had one of those for a long time.

You silly man, what were you thinking of ?

OH - and you can tell Mr Camoron (spelling intenional), that speaking as a lifelong Tory voter, I can assure him that he has lost my vote. You see I think that many civil liberties have been eroded, and it would seem that Mr Camoron would like to get rid of freedom of speech too.

As a member of the Conservative party, I am ashamed at what has happened to you Mr Hastilow. For many years, Enoch Powell was a great MP who stood up for his principles. It is sad that many in our party, including Ms Spellman have decided ideology no longer matters.

When Mr Powell made his speech it was one of many on various topics that reflected the views of many in his country. Was it what people necesarilly wanted to hear? Probably not. Was it truthful, heartfelt and non-racist? Probably yes.

I am glad that Enoch's spirit (which as a 21 year old I cannot recall first hand) is still alive in some, and that your principles have not got in the way of ambition.

Our party, the House of Commons and the people of your ex-constituency are all the poorer without you.

In some ways one can't blame the Race Relations Industry for using a political weapon that works, but it shows up the Tory leadership for what they are.
The only thing they stand for is their personal power and they fail to see how bitterness on this issue has built up and is growing.
The only thing that will make Cameron see sense is for Conservatives who are embittered by the treatment of Hastilow to withold their votes, or vote for another party. Sad but that is the reality!

Caroline Spelman is wholly ridiculous. Yet again, fundamental truths (this time on immigration) are being swept under the carpet in the belief that matters will thereby improve.

The truth is that the UK needs people such as you. So I trust you will not pack it in.

Just guessing a bit, the economic state of the country is deteriorating from here on and, if so, the strains caused by our current lunatic immigration policy (whether compelled by the EU or tolerated through NuLab silliness) will impact. It is anybody's guess as to how it will pan out. But it is less likely to pan out satisfactorily if the truth as presented by you is repressed.

The reason the tories had to shut you up and quickly!

What you read below are just a few snippets I clipped out of proposals for new regulations from the supreme soviet in Brussels. These proposals are to combat the rampant xenophobia and racism that is such an integral part of the white man’s makeup.

Read them and cry, because if they become law we are screwed. The devil is in the small print. I think the buzz word to describe the paragraph below would be “proactive”.

Put in plain language, it means that “we decide what is racist and xenophobic and if we don’t like what you have to say we will prosecute you.”

Look out Vlaams Belang and the BNP, the end is nigh.

(8) It should be ensured that investigations and prosecutions of offences involving racism and xenophobia are not dependent on reports or accusation made by victims, who are often particularly vulnerable and reluctant to initiate legal proceedings.

If you can disentangle the legal jargon in the following (Article 10) it means “if you are a European Blogger and post on an American server we can still get you”:
- - - - - - - - -

Article 10

Jurisdiction

1. Each Member State shall take the necessary measures to establish its jurisdiction with regard to the conduct referred to in Articles 1 and 2 where the conduct has been committed:

(a) in whole or in part within its territory; or

(b) by one of its nationals; or

(c) for the benefit of a legal person that has its head office in the territory of that Member State.

2. When establishing jurisdiction in accordance with paragraph 1(a), each Member State shall take the necessary measures to ensure that its jurisdiction extends to cases where the conduct is committed through an information system and:

(a) the offender commits the conduct when physically present in its territory, whether or not the conduct involves material hosted on an information system in its territory;

(b) the conduct involves material hosted on an information system in its territory, whether or not the offender commits the conduct when physically present in its territory.

[…]

4. A Member State may decide not to apply, or to apply only in specific cases or circumstances, the jurisdiction rule set out in paragraphs 1(b) and (c).

This, by the way, is the most disgusting part of the proposals.

These sanctions are nothing more than Draconian. They not only turn you into a non-person but they punish your family as well.

I presume (that a judicial winding-up order) is nothing more than a posh name for forced bankruptcy to pay for the inflated compensation to the dress- wearing camel herder you decided I had insulted.

Article 6

Sanctions for legal persons

1. Each Member State shall take the necessary measures to ensure that a legal person held liable pursuant to Article 5(1) is punishable by effective, proportionate and dissuasive sanctions, which shall include criminal or non-criminal fines and may include other sanctions, such as:

(a) exclusion from entitlement to public benefits or aid;

(b) temporary or permanent disqualification from the practice of commercial activities;

(c) placing under judicial supervision;

(d) a judicial winding-up order.

2. Member States shall take the necessary measures to ensure that a legal person held liable pursuant to Article 5(2) is punishable by effective, proportionate and dissuasive sanctions or measures.

The American William S. Once again, two sworn enemies, Marxism - - specifically, the cultural Marxism commonly known as Political Correctness - - and Islam, have made a Devil's bargain whereby each assists the other against a common enemy, the remnants of the Christian West." "London was only a foretaste of what those policies will bring to Europe and America. If we dare rip down the camouflage nets cultural Marxism has erected to blind us we see Europe has two real choices: an infinity of Londons or second expulsion of the Moors."

Of course, the same collaboration happened in Iran, where popular "reformers" such as Ali Shariati in the years before the 1979 revolution infused Islam with aspects of Western thought and made the Marxists believe that they could coexist with Islam. So they cooperated in overthrowing the Shah - and then all the godless Socialists were the first ones to hang from lamp posts around the country when Khomeini and his Islamic cronies seized power. The secular Leftists in Europe know fully well that they do not agree with religious Muslims on some issues, but they believe they are the senior partners in the alliance and that they can "ride the tiger." That may be true now, but for how long will the situation remain like that?
